Gateside's Garden Winners

The theme for the pallet gardens was “The
Homecoming”. The children and their teacher
spent many hours working on their garden and were
thrilled to win first prize for their entry. In fact
three trophies were awarded to the school, the
Holland Cup for the pallet garden, the Carnegie
Quaich for their dahlias and an award from the
Allotment Society for the best pallet garden. The
prize money of £100 is a most welcome addition to
school funds. The children are thinking carefully
about the best way to use it.

Inspired by the purple heather and the rich colours
of Scottish tartan the P4-7 pupils of Gateside
Primary School designed their tartan garden,
incorporating a symbol of the national flower the
thistle, made with ornamental cabbages, heathers,
primulas and chrysanthemums. Each rectangular seed
tray was carefully planted up by the pupils then
arranged to look like tartan. The effect was achieved
by mixing cut flowers, cabbages and the delicate
purple rowan berries.
Many of the children really enjoyed finding out more
about growing dahlias and planting their own little
gardens. We hope to continue producing young
gardeners who share a love of growing plants at
school, at home and in the future.
