Gateside Big Day
Sunday 14th
June 2009 saw the return of the Gateside Big Day at
Gateside Park. Heavy showers and thunder and
lightning didn’t deter the fun in the park and
round 100 people enjoyed the football and BBQ. Four
matches were played on the day and lots of good
football was on display for the spectators. In the
first game a Gateside Select team took on Perth PSG
and the final score ended 3-2 to PSG. Gateside Select
played very well and Carla Laing was awarded the
player of the match. Gateside Primary 1 to 3 were
next on the pitch and they played Dunbog Primary 1 to
3 in an entertaining game that ended 2 v 1 to Dunbog.
Cameron Brown was on target for Gateside from the
penalty spot and he also earned himself the man of
the match award. Gateside Primary 4 to 7 then
entertained Dunbog Primary 4 to 7 in a one sided
match that ended 8 v 2 to Dunbog. Matthew Allan was
on target twice for Gateside while Jack Jones earned
himself man of the match for Dunbog in a very
composed performance. Finally, in the match everyone
was waiting for had a Gateside Select
Children’s Team take on a Gateside Select
Parents team. The Children’s team was helped by
their two coaches David Jones and Calum Bruce and the
game certainly lived up to all the pre-match hype.
David Jones scored an early goal for the Children but
a Lawrence Hogarth header cancelled it out just
before half time in a very entertaining half which
showed that the Parents were not going to sit back
and let their children win! In the second half
Lawrence Hogarth scored another good header to put
the Parents 2 v 1 up midway through the half and just
when it looked all over David Jones scored a quality
header from a corner a few minutes from time. The
final whistle went and it was decided by a penalty
shoot out where the Children’s team won 3 v 1
to retain the trophy for another year. There were
many people who made this day a success and thanks go
to everyone involved.
